Norilsk Nickel says resumes operation of Taimyrsky mine after flood

MOSCOW, Jun 4 (PRIME) -- Russian metals giant Norilsk Nickel has resumed operations of its Taimyrsky mine after a flood, and the facility is to reach projected capacity by the end of June, the company said in a statement on Friday.

“Norilsk Nickel… has started gradual recovery of ore production at the Taimyrsky mine and plans to ensure the facility’s normal operations soon… Water has been fully pumped from the mine,” it said.

The Taimyrsky has reached daily output of 5,000 tonnes of ore, which accounts for around 40% of the projected capacity, the company added.

In February, Norilsk Nickel partially suspended operations of its two key mines, Oktyabrsky and Taimyrsky, due to an inflow of groundwater. After that, the company had to revise its production plans for 2021, cutting the expected nickel output by 15.2–15.9%, the copper plan by 15.9–16.6%, and the output plan for platinum group metals by 19.9–21%.

Production at the Oktyabrsky mine was fully restored in May.
